Topic: Biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification overview and forecasting for the Boundary region
This will be an exciting opportunity to learn about Ecosystem Classification in British Columbia, with a focus on the Boundary region. Colin Mahony will be sharing his expertise on what shifts we may see in the Boundary based on a changing climate, specifically tied to the climate change projections. Knowing how our biogeoclimatic ecosystem may change can help us understand some of the effects we may be experiencing over the next few decades.

Colin Mahony (Research Climatologist @Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development)
Colin Mahony is a registered professional forester with experience applying Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification (BEC) in many regions of BC. His PhD research at UBC Forestry established the potential for new BEC climate types to emerge in southern British Columbia due to global heating. Colin’s current work includes projecting the future distributions of BEC climate types to support climate change informed tree species selection for reforestation.
Deb MacKillop (Research Ecologist @Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development)
Deb MacKillop works out of the BC Government Nelson office for the Kootenay Boundary Region. She has written two field guides for updated BEC in southeastern BC and is in the process of completed a third, “A field guide to ecosystem classification and identification for the Boundary-Okanagan-Southern Arrow”, set to be published in mid 2021.
